Hot HB stars in globular clusters: physical parameters and consequences for theory

چکیده
We present spectroscopic analyses of 17 faint blue stars in the globular cluster NGC 6752, using optical and UV spectrophotometric data and intermediate resolution optical spectra. Effective temperatures, surface gravities, and helium abundances of the stars are determined and compared to theoretical predictions. All stars are helium deficient by factors ranging from 3 to more than 100, indicative of gravitational settling of helium. Stars with effective temperatures above about 20000 K (sdBs) fit well to the evolutionary tracks, whereas the cooler stars show lower surface gravities than theoretically expected. This agrees with earlier findings by Moehler et al. (1995a) for the faint blue stars in M 15. Deriving masses from the atmospheric parameters and the cluster distance leads to ameanmass of the sdB stars of 0.50 M and a standard deviation of about 0.043 dex, which is below the value derived of the observational errors and therefore consistent with a very narrow mass distribution. The mean mass is in good agreement with the (0.49 ± 0.02) M expected if sdB stars are extreme horizontal branch stars with a helium core of 0.48 M and an extremely thin hydrogen layer. The cooler stars however show a significantly lower mean mass of 0.30 M with a standard deviation of the mean of 0.059 dex in agreement with the findings of Moehler et al. (1995a) and de Boer et al. (1995) for the BHB stars in M 15 and NGC 6397, respectively. The problems presented by the different mass distributions of BHB and sdB stars within one cluster are discussed.

Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g), masses and helium abundances are derived for 42 hot horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular cluster NGC 6752. For 19 stars we derive magnesium and iron abundances as well and find that iron is enriched by a factor of 50 on average with respect to the cluster abundance whereas the magnesium abundances are consistent with the cluster abundance. Radiatio...

Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g), and radial velocities are derived for twelve candidate blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, which so far have been known to contain primarily red HB stars. The spectroscopic targets were selected from the catalog of hot stars detected in these clusters at 1600 Å using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Spectr...

the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results of spectroscopic analyses of hot horizontal branch (HB) stars in M 13 and M 3, which form a famous " second parameter " pair. From the spectra and Strömgren photometry we derived – for the first time in M 13 – atmospheric parameters (effective temperature and surface gravity). For stars with Strömgren t...

Quantitative spectroscopic analyses of two faint blue stars (V=19 m. 5 – 20 m. 0) in the globular cluster M 15 are presented. Their derived T eff , gravities and absolute magnitudes (T eff =24000K, log g=5.2, M V =4 m. 3; T eff =36000K, log g=5.9, M V =4 m. 7, respectively) are matched very well by models for the extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB). Both stars are bona-fide subdwarf B stars making ...
متن کاملHorizontal Branch A- and B-type Stars in Globular Clusters
Globular clusters offer ideal laboratories to test the predictions of stellar evolution. When doing so with spectroscopic analyses during the 1990s, however, the parameters we derived for hot horizontal branch stars deviated systematically from theoretical predictions. The parameters of cooler, A-type horizontal branch stars, on the other hand, were consistent with evolutionary theories. In 199...
